MARE FESTIVAL: A TOURISM CATALYST AND ITS IMPACT IN IDANRE (2000-2020)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examines the MARE Festival as a tourism catalyst and its impact on Idanre from 2000 to 2020. The MARE Festival, a cultural and traditional event celebrated in Idanre, Ondo State, has attracted tourists, promoted local culture, and contributed to economic and social development in the region. The research explores how the festival has influenced tourism growth, local businesses, employment opportunities, and cultural preservation. Using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, including interviews with local stakeholders, observation, and secondary data analysis, the study identifies both the positive and negative effects of tourism associated with the festival. Findings indicate that the MARE Festival has significantly enhanced Idanre’s visibility as a tourist destination, stimulated local economic activities, strengthened community participation, and encouraged the preservation of indigenous cultural practices. However, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, environmental concerns, and limited government support have constrained the festival’s full potential. The study concludes that cultural festivals like MARE can serve as powerful tools for sustainable tourism development and socio-economic growth if effectively managed and supported by stakeholders. Recommendations include strategic planning, investment in tourism infrastructure, and community engagement to maximize the festival’s benefits for Idanre and its people.
