EFFECT OF PLANTAIN LEAF ASH AS PARTIAL REPLACEMENT OF CEMENT IN CONCRETE
Abstract
The research titled “Effect of Plantain Leaf Ash, PLA, as Partial Replacement of Cement in Concrete” investigated the potentiality of employing PLA in partially replacing cement in concrete and the likely effects on its properties. The plantain leaves were sourced from Gembu in Sardauna Local Government Area of Taraba State. They were properly dried, incinerated, ground to ashes and sieved to obtain the PLA sample for the research. The chemical analysis obtained indicates that PLA has 26% of silica, SiO2, 20% of Calcium oxide, CaO, 9% of Ferric oxide, Fe2O3, 3% of Magnesium oxide, MgO and 0.15% of Aluminum oxid,e Al2O3, respectively. The actual concrete mixes of 1:2:4 with PLA content by partially replacing cement in order of 0%, 5%, 10% and 15% by weight of cement were cast, cured and tested. The result of workability (slump) indicated an increase from 23mm to 62mm for 0% to 15% replacement. The results showed a continual decrease in compressive strength with increase in percentage replacement of cement from 18N/mm2 to 7.03N/mm2 for 0% to 15% partial replacement at 28dys of curing. Based on the study and analysis of results, it is observed that PLA increases workability but decreases the compressive strength of concrete.
