ASSESSING THE EEFFECTIVENESS OF HYBRID SECURITY GOVERNANCE IN CCOMBATING CRIME IN OF AKURE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREAS OF ONDO STATE.
Abstract
The findings reveal that both security actors face significant challenges that limit their capacity to ensure community safety. While the police are perceived as under-resourced, poorly equipped, and slow to respond, vigilante groups are valued for their local knowledge and accessibility but are seen as having limited impact on overall crime reduction. Collaboration between the two shows some procedural strengths but suffers from weak formal structures, inconsistent information sharing, and inadequate training. These systemic gaps, coupled with resource constraints and mistrust between agencies, undermine the overall effectiveness of security provision. A descriptive research design was used, and a stratified random sampling technique was employed to collect primary data from the study area. A semi-structured questionnaire schedule was administered to 140 respondents. The data collected were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 28. The study revealed that that improving community security in Akure South requires a comprehensive approach that strengthens institutional frameworks, enhances training and capacity-building, promotes effective collaboration between police and vigilante groups, and addresses resource limitations. Without these interventions, public skepticism and uncertainty regarding security effectiveness will persist, constraining the potential for sustainable improvements in crime prevention and community trust.
