IMPACT OF MISUSE OF DRUG AMONG FEMALE STUDENTS IN UNIVERSITY OF MAIDUGURI CAMPUS

Drug misuse is a critical public health issue, particularly among young adults, including female students in tertiary institutions. This study investigates the impact of drug misuse among female students on the University of Maiduguri campus. The research aims to determine the prevalence of drug misuse, identify the underlying factors contributing to this behavior, and assess its socio-academic and psychological effects on female students. Using a mixed-method approach, data were collected through structured questionnaires and in-depth interviews from a representative sample of female students. Preliminary findings reveal that peer pressure, stress, academic challenges, and inadequate awareness about the dangers of drug misuse are significant contributors. The consequences include declining academic performance, mental health challenges, strained social relationships, and increased susceptibility to risky behaviors. The study highlights the need for targeted intervention programs, such as counseling services, awareness campaigns, and strict enforcement of drug regulations within the university community. These findings provide a foundation for policymakers and university administrators to design effective strategies to combat drug misuse and promote a healthier learning environment.
