AN ANALYSIS OF THE ROLE OF TRADITIONAL MEDIA IN DISSEMINATING HEALTH INFORMATION IN ILORIN WEST, KWARA STATE

ABSTRACT This study explores the role of traditional media in disseminating health information within Ilorin West Local Government, Kwara State, Nigeria. It examines the effectiveness, challenges, and community perceptions of health communication through traditional media channels such as television, radio, and newspapers. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative surveys (n=300) and qualitative interviews (n=30) to gather comprehensive data. Key findings indicate that traditional media remains a vital source of health information, with approximately 75% of respondents expressing trust in these channels. However, challenges such as limited accessibility, misinformation, and the need for culturally relevant content were identified. The study underscores the importance of tailoring health messages to local contexts and encourages the integration of interactive elements to enhance community engagement. Recommendations for improving health communication strategies include simplifying language, fostering community involvement, and leveraging both traditional and digital media platforms. Overall, this research highlights the critical role of traditional media in promoting public health and addresses the need for effective communication strategies that cater to diverse populations.
