INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL MEDIA USAGE ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF BIOLOGY STUDENTS IN LAGOS MAINLAND LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA
Abstract
This research aimed to assess the impact of social media usage on the academic achievement of Biology students in Lagos Mainland Local Government Area. The results highlighted a multifaceted association between these factors. Specifically, the study revealed a substantial inverse relationship between excessive social media utilisation and academic performance. The general aim of this influence of social media usage on the academic performance of Biology students in Mainland Local Government.
Survey research design was used to gather data for the study. Simple random sampling technique was used to select one hundred and fifty (150) Biology Senior Secondary Students as respondents for this study. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from the respondents, the research instrument has a reliability coefficient of 0.76. Frequency and simple percentage was used to analyse the demographic data of respondents. Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used to evaluate the relationship between the independent and dependent variable.
The study discovered that excessive engagement with social media has a detrimental effect on academic performance. However, it also uncovered the potential advantages of utilizing these platforms as educational resources. These findings emphasize the importance of adopting a well-rounded and measured approach to social media usage among student populations. It was recommended that Parents and school managements should equip students with knowledge and skills for responsible social media use, and they should promote the use of social media as a learning tool.
