THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN URBAN POULTRY PRODUCTION IN MAIDUGURI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, BORNO STATE
Abstract
The study concludes that women in Maiduguri play important roles in urban poultry production, particularly in operational and marketing activities. However, their level of involvement remains relatively low due to financial constraints, limited access to formal information channels, high production costs, disease challenges, and socio-cultural barriers.
Urban poultry production holds significant potential for improving food security, increasing household income, and promoting women’s economic empowerment. Nonetheless, maximizing these benefits requires deliberate policy support, improved access to credit and extension services, capacity building, and gender mainstreaming in agricultural development programs.
Empowering women in poultry production is not only a matter of equity but also a strategic approach to sustainable agricultural development and poverty reduction in Maiduguri and Nigeria at large.
