THE EFFECTIVENESS OF TEACHING AIDS IN ENHANCING ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN AKOKO SOUTH WEST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA
Abstract
This study investigated the effectiveness of teaching aids in enhancing English language proficiency among senior secondary school students in Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State. The objectives were to assess the relationship between teaching aids and English proficiency, identify the types of aids most effective in enhancing learning, evaluate the role of multimedia and digital teaching aids, examine the challenges faced by teachers in integrating them, and provide recommendations for their effective utilization. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. Data were collected from 200 respondents (students and teachers) using a researcher-designed questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests at the 0.05 level of significance. The findings showed a significant positive relationship between teaching aids and students’ English proficiency (χ² = 42.77, df = 3, p < 0.05), leading to the rejection of Hypothesis One. Different types of teaching aids were also found to vary significantly in effectiveness (χ² = 41.77, df = 3, p < 0.05), rejecting Hypothesis Two. Multimedia and digital aids significantly improved comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency (χ² = 38.49, df = 3, p < 0.05), resulting in the rejection of Hypothesis Three. Teachers were found to face considerable challenges such as inadequate resources and training (χ² = 28.23, df = 3, p < 0.05), rejecting Hypothesis Four. Finally, the overall use of teaching aids was shown to significantly enhance English proficiency (χ² = 36.72, df = 3, p < 0.05), thereby rejecting Hypothesis Five. The study concluded that teaching aids play a vital role in improving English language proficiency, especially through visual, multimedia, and digital resources. It recommended that schools provide adequate teaching aids, government and stakeholders invest in digital infrastructure, and teachers receive continuous training on the effective use of modern instructional tools. These measures will optimize English teaching and learning, thereby bridging proficiency gaps in rural schools.
