Abstract

ABSTRACT The stem of Usteria guineesis was dried and pulverized and subjected to n-hexane and ethyl acetate extraction. Thin layer chromatography analysis revealed four spots (Rf values of 0.39, 0.61, 0.83 and 0.93) in the stem n-hexane extract of Usteria guineesis. Preliminary phytochemical screening of the n-hexane extract revealed presence of alkaloids, cardiac glycoside, steroids, terpenoids and flavonoids. The result obtained from the FT-IR absorption band revealed 2914.8 cm⁻¹, 2847.7 cm⁻¹, 1703.4 cm⁻¹, 1461.1 cm⁻¹, 1375.4 cm⁻¹, 1293.4 cm⁻¹, 1170.4 cm⁻¹, 1114.5 cm⁻¹, 1036.2 cm⁻¹ and 1341.8 cm⁻¹ for n-hexane extract of stem of Usteria guineesis which correspond to (ƲC-Hstr sp3 of alkane), (ƲC-Hstr of alkane), (ƲC=Ostr carbonyl of ketone), (ƲC=Cstr of arene), (ƲN-Hstr of amine), (ƲO-Hstr unsaturated), (ƲC-Ostr of alcohol), (ƲC-Ostr of alcohol), (ƲO-Hstr of alcohol) and (ƲC-Nstr of amine). The proximate analysis carried out on the digested sample of Usteria guineesis contains dry matter (85.6 %), moisture content (14.40 %) and ash content (6.00 %). The AAS revealed that the digested sample of Usteria guineesis contains Zn (1.623 ppm), Mn (0.084 ppm), Fe (1.124 ppm), Pb (1.290 ppm), K (1.273 ppm), Ca (0.090 ppm), Hg (0.040 ppm) and Cu (1.031 ppm), zn was found to be the most abundant in the digested stem of Usteria guineesis. Suggestions and recommendations are offered for further study.
