DEVELOPMENT OF AN IOT-BASED REAL-TIME MONITORING SYSTEM FOR DEFORESTATION ACTIVITIES

Abstract

ABSTRACT One critical threat to the environment that affects the loss of forests is illegal logging and unauthorized human encroachment. Given the gravity of the problem, this research devised an IoT-based real-time monitoring system to identify activities associated with deforestation. It employed a combination of four sensors, a sound sensor that detects chainsaws, a vibration sensor that senses movement of a tree, a PIR motion sensor that detects human presence, and a DHT11 sensor that measures temperature and humidity to profile the environment. The real-time visualization of the data was linked to a microcontroller and a dashboard, and a GSM module was used to send SMS alerts to forest authority when predetermined deforestation activities were recognized. System tests proved that chainsaw noise and vibration shifts, motion sensing, and even undeveloped environmental changes were detected with corresponding dashboard notifications and SMS alerts sent to predetermined contacts. Your system also proactively alerts people, which is a first for technology in forest surveillance. This tool is a first for forest management in terms responsiveness to deforestation.
