Abstract

The increasing demand for smart systems and intelligent systems in Nigerian institutions has brought about the necessity for the adoption of an automated solutions that enhance both security and tracking of human and vehicular movements in the university. The findings demonstrate that the developed system provides a secure and efficient solution for university gate management. This project presents the design and implementation of a Smart Barrier Gate System for the enhancement of security system in the University by integrating RFID technology for vehicle authentication, fingerprint biometrics for pedestrian access, and an Arduino-based microcontroller unit to coordinate operations, SD card module to save the access grant, a DC motor-driven barrier arm serving as the actuator. Experimental results showed that RFID authentication achieved 96% accuracy with an average response time of 1.8 seconds, while fingerprint recognition achieved 94% accuracy with an average response time of 2.5 seconds. The barrier mechanism reliably opened and closed within an average of 4.8 seconds per cycle, demonstrating system efficiency. Overall, the developed system uses smart automation to provide an average security and cost-effective solution that overcomes the limitations of manual gatekeeping with recommendations for cloud integration, mobile interfaces, and ruggedized sensors for large-scale deployment.
