Abstract

This project involved the design, installation, and assessment of a rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system at the Federal University of Technology, Minna. Motivated by the unreliable and expensive public grid supply, the system was developed to provide electricity to three offices and a large classroom in the Physics Department. It was designed to meet a daily energy requirement of about 20,208 Wh. The main components included eight 550 W solar modules, a 5.5 kVA inverter, a charge controller, and a battery bank consisting of eight 12 V, 220 Ah batteries configured for 48 V. The system delivered a consistent 230 V AC output, and the solar panels performed reliably within expected parameters under field conditions. The installation demonstrated solar PV technology's potential as a dependable and sustainable energy solution for academic institutions in Nigeria. Although the initial investment is relatively high, the advantages include reduced long-term operating costs and improved energy security. The project serves as a practical model for renewable energy adoption in similar environments.
