PERCEIVED DETERMINANTS OF INFERTILITY AMONG WOMEN IN OBIO/AKPOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA IN RIVERS STATE
Abstract
Infertility remains a major reproductive health challenge globally, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa where procreation is culturally valued. This study investigated the perceived determinants of infertility among women in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria. A descriptive cross-sectional survey design was adopted. The study population comprised women of reproductive age (15–49 years), and a structured questionnaire was used for data collection. A total of 200 respondents were selected using a multistage sampling technique. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean) and inferential statistics (Chi-square test).
Findings revealed that the most commonly perceived determinants of infertility included sexually transmitted infections (STIs), previous unsafe abortions, hormonal imbalance, fibroids, lifestyle factors (alcohol use, smoking), obesity, delayed marriage, stress, and spiritual causes. Socio-cultural beliefs significantly influenced women’s perception of infertility causes (p < 0.05). Educational level was significantly associated with biomedical understanding of infertility (p < 0.05).
The study concluded that while many women recognized medical causes of infertility, misconceptions and cultural beliefs persist. It is recommended that intensified reproductive health education, community sensitization programs, and improved access to fertility services be implemented in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
