GEOLOGICAL, GEOPHYSICAL AND GEOCHEMICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF ROCKS AROUND SEKUN OWODE, SHARE SHEET 202, SOUTHWESTERN NIGERIA

Abstract

This study employed an integrated approach to carry out a preliminary investigation of possible mineralization around Sekun Owode for exploitation. Geological studies shows that the area is mainly underlain by migmatite/gneiss dotted by quartzites, mica-schist, amphibolites, pegmatites intrusions of varying composition such as quartzo-feldspathic pegmatite, quartzo-micaceous pegmatite. An isolated occurrence of talc-schist was also observed to be associated with the migmatite. The migmatite/gneiss constitutes the background rock, underlying more than 80% of the study area. The migmatites/gneiss complex are comprised of different composition such as biotite gneiss, hornblende gneiss, augen gneiss, and granite gneiss. The study area comprised of 15 cadastral units that covered the probable mineralization zones which were mapped and studied using aeromagnetic and Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) to delineate areas of magnetic and aero-radiometric anomalies. The Potassium (K), Thorium (Th), and Uranium (U) were used to delineate areas of magnetic highs and lows corresponding to baren and potential mineralization areas. The mapped anomalies from both the ground magnetics and 2D ERT were overlain on the lineament map generated from the aeromagnetic survey for correlation and integration. This technique identified seven (7) probable prospects for further exploratory drilling. This is critical as only exploration drilling can affirm the interpreted geophysical signatures and confirm the presence of ore mineralization in the area.
