THE EFFECTS OF DEFORESTATION ON LAND USE DYNAMICS IN PATIGI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, KWARA STATE
Abstract
Deforestation has become a major environmental concern in Nigeria, with severe
implications for land use, biodiversity, and livelihoods. This study examines the effects of
deforestation on land use dynamics in Patigi, Kwara State, between 2015 and 2024, using
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing techniques. The study aims to
analyze land use trends, identify major causes of deforestation, and assess its impacts on
environmental and socio-economic conditions. Satellite imagery (Landsat 8 and 9) and GISbased analysis were used to classify land cover changes over the study period. Field surveys
and interviews were conducted to complement spatial data. Results revealed a significant
decline in forest cover approximately 30% reduction mainly due to agricultural expansion,
fuelwood harvesting, and infrastructural development. Agricultural land increased by 25%,
while bare land and settlements expanded by 15%, indicating intense pressure on natural
resources. The consequences of deforestation include soil erosion, biodiversity loss, water
resource depletion, and reduced agricultural productivity. The study also found that local
livelihoods have been adversely affected, as communities depend heavily on forest resources
for income, food, and energy. The research concludes that uncontrolled deforestation poses a
serious threat to environmental sustainability in Patigi. It recommends the implementation of
community-based forest management, afforestation programs, and sustainable agricultural
practices to curb forest loss and promote ecosystem balance.
