PROXIMATE ANALYSIS AND DETERMINATION OF PHYTOCHEMICAL IN AGERATUM CONYZOIDES (BILLY GOAT WEED)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Ageratum conyzoides has been known since ancient times for its medicinal properties and effectiveness in the treatment of various ailments ranging from skin diseases, fever, diarrhea inflammation, measles, and so on. The basis of the research studied the proximate and phytochemicals composition of the leaves of the plant. The chemical analysis was done according to the standard procedure. Alkaloids, saponin, phenol, glycosides, and other constituents revealed the presence in the water extract of the sample but showed an absence of favonoids and steroids. It also revealed the presence of other constituents in n-hexane extracts while tannin, terpenoids, and phenol were not detected in the n-hexane extracts of the sample.
The quantitative phytochemical of alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, and saponins contains 6.4%, 24%, 23.36%, and 9.2% respectively. The proximate analysis of the leaves of the plant contains (12%)Ash, crude fat (28%), crude fiber (8%, moisture (19%), and protein(5.03%), carbohydrate (27.97%).The chemical constituents of leaves of Ageratum conzoides may be responsible for their application in treatment and the management of various diseases.
