Abstract

Effect of tank background colour on fish performance is largely dependent on the species used, stage of development and colour selection for the investigation. The present study was designed to better evaluate growth performance of juveniles claries gariepinus reared with 4 different colours of tanks/containers in duplicate, as well as using a white, blue and red tank. A Regularly measure and record of weight and length of each juvenile Clarias gariepenus in all tanks was observed and recorded. A regular observations to document feeding habits, swimming patterns, Survival rate, mortality rate, conditional factor and any signs of stress or abnormal behaviour was Conducted. The result shows that based on average weight, Clarias gariepinus grows well with white container followed by red container and then blue container. In terms of specific growth rate, Clarias gariepinus grows well with blue container followed by white container and then red container. Study also find out that based on survival rate, Clarias gariepinus grows well with white container followed by blue container and then red container. The weight gained by Clarias with white tank container is better than their survival rates despite being it the second in survival rate. In addition all the fishes in red and white containers were in good condition, while that in blue container was in poor condition. Further investigation was needed on the specific factors in the Red container that contribute to higher weight gain. Conduct additional experiments is also needed to validate and further explore the observed trends.
