THE IMPACTS OF POLITICAL EDUCATION ON THE PARTICIPATION OF NIGERIA IN THE DEMOCRATIC PROCESS IN NIGERIA
Abstract
This study examines the impacts of political education on the participation of Nigeria in the democratic process, using Nigeria as a case study. Political education remains central to shaping citizens' awareness, attitudes, and engagement in democratic governance.
The study adopted a descriptive survey design with a sample of 300 respondents selected through a multi-stage sampling technique across different geopolitical zones. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed with both descriptive and inferential statistics.
Findings reveal that respondents had relatively high exposure to political education, largely through schools, media, and social platforms. Political awareness was also significant, as many respondents demonstrated knowledge of government functions, electoral processes, and citizens' rights. Attitudes toward democratic participation were largely positive, with a strong belief in the power of voting and a sense of civic duty. Actual participation, particularly in voting and following political developments, was moderate to high, though lower in activities such as political rallies and civic group membership. Despite these encouraging indicators, challenges such as distrust in democratic institutions, poverty, political apathy, and limited grassroots civic education were identified as barriers to sustained engagement.
The study concludes that political education is vital for strengthening Nigeria's democracy by fostering informed, active, and responsible citizenship. It recommends strengthening formal and informal civic education, leveraging media for engagement, rebuilding trust in democratic institutions, and promoting grassroots participation through civic organizations.
