Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines the availability and usability of chemistry laboratory facilities for teaching organic chemistry in senior secondary schools in Gwale L.G.A Kano State. The research investigates the extent to which essential laboratory equipment, reagents, and other instructional materials are present and effectively utilized in schools, with a focus on fostering a practical understanding of organic chemistry concepts among students. Three research questions were drawn from the objectives of the study. The findings reveal a significant disparity in the availability of laboratory resources between urban and rural schools, with many institutions lacking basic facilities required for effective teaching and learning. Additionally, the study highlights challenges such as inadequate teacher training in practical techniques, poor maintenance of laboratory equipment, and limited funding for laboratory upkeep. Despite these challenges, the research identifies innovative strategies adopted by some schools to optimize the use of limited resources, including collaborative experiments and improvisation of local materials. The study concludes that addressing the gaps in the availability and usability of chemistry laboratory facilities is crucial for enhancing the teaching and learning of organic chemistry in Nigerian senior secondary schools. Recommendations include increased government funding, regular training for chemistry teachers, and the establishment of standardized laboratory infrastructure to ensure equitable access to quality education. This research underscores the importance of practical education in developing students’ scientific skills and preparing them for higher education and careers in science-related fields.
