A SOCIO-POLITICAL IMPACT OF ARINGINYA FESTIVAL ON IKARE AKOKO PEOPLE
Abstract
This study examines the socio-political impact of the Aringinya Festival on the people of Ikare-Akoko in Ondo State. Festivals in African societies serve as important cultural institutions that reinforce social values, promote unity, and sustain traditional governance structures. The Aringinya Festival, an annual celebration centered on the virtue of chastity among maidens, represents a unique cultural heritage of the Ikare-Akoko people. Beyond its ritual and aesthetic expressions, the festival performs significant social and political functions within the community.
Using a historical and analytical approach, the study explores the origins, rituals, and symbolic meanings of the festival and evaluates its influence on social cohesion, moral regulation, gender relations, traditional authority, and community development. Findings reveal that the festival strengthens communal identity, legitimizes the authority of the Owa-Ale, promotes cultural continuity, and stimulates local economic activities during the festive period. However, the study also observes emerging challenges posed by modernization, religious transformation, and changing perceptions of gender roles.
The research concludes that the Aringinya Festival remains a vital socio-political institution in Ikare-Akoko, serving as both a cultural preservation mechanism and a platform for reinforcing community values. It recommends adaptive strategies to sustain the festival’s relevance while addressing contemporary social realities.
