Abstract

his study investigates the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the academic excellence of Biology students at Northwest University, Kano. A quantitative research approach was adopted, employing a quasi-experimental design that utilized pre-test and post-test assessments to measure changes in students’ academic performance after integrating AI tools into their learning process. The study population consisted of 497 biology education students at the 300 and 400 levels, from which a sample of 217 was selected using Krejcie and Morgan’s sample size determination table. A simple random sampling technique ensured fair representation of participants.Data was collected using a structured Likert-scale questionnaire designed to assess students' perceptions and experiences regarding AI usage in their academic activities. The collected data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods, including frequencies, means, and standard deviations. The findings reveal that while AI tools positively influence comprehension and engagement with biological concepts, challenges such as inadequate institutional support, high costs, and limited training hinder optimal utilization. The study concludes that AI has the potential to enhance students’ academic achievement in biology when effectively integrated into educational practices, and it recommends increased institutional support, improved accessibility, and AI literacy training to maximize its benefits.
