COMPARISON OF PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING, POLYPHENOLIC CONTENTS, AND FRAP OF LASIANTHERA AFRICANA AND VERNONIA AMYGDALINA LEAF EXTRACTS.
Abstract
This research delves into the examination of the phytochemical makeup, polyphenolic concentrations, and antioxidant characteristics of Lasianthera africana and Vernonia amygdalina. Both plants, well-regarded in traditional medicine, contain essential phytochemicals such as saponin, tannin, terpenoid, and glycosides. Vernonia amygdalina showcases a higher total phenolic content (TPC) and ferric reducing antioxidant properties (FRAP), signifying an enhanced antioxidant capability in comparison to Lasianthera africana. The lack of noteworthy distinctions in total flavonoid content (TFC) implies potential resemblances in therapeutic attributes associated with flavonoids. The coexistence of these phytochemicals underscores the medicinal importance of both plants. While Vernonia amygdalina's potent antioxidant features position it as a possible solution for oxidative stress-related ailments, Lasianthera africana, exhibiting comparable TFC, may possess distinctive bioactive elements or exhibit separate pharmacological impacts. This study offers valuable insights into the antioxidant capacities of these plants, opening avenues for further exploration into particular bioactive compounds and their mechanisms of therapeutic action.
