PHYSICOCHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF COASTAL WATER OBTAINED FROM ORON LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, AKWA IBOM STATE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigated the physicochemical characteristics of coastal water,
revealing valuable insights into its quality and potential environmental
implications. Water sample was analyzed and the result for various
parameters revealed temperature (25.60 C ± 0.003), conductivity (5.80
ms/cm ± 0.000), salinity (0.00 ppt ± 0.000), dissolved oxygen (10.25 mg/L ±
0.005) and other physiochemical properties. The result showed moderate
levels of biochemical oxygen demand (6.15 mg/L ± 0.003) and chemical
oxygen demand (32.20 mg/L ± 0.010), Acidity (96.00 mg/L ± 0.002) and
alkalinity (56.00 mg/L ± 0.004) levels were within acceptable ranges. This
study detects notable concentrations of anions. Including Sulphate
(4.54/mg/L ± 0.012), nitrate (5.935 mg/L ± 0.05), Phosphate (2.245 mg/L ±
5.010), and Chloride (53.960 mg/L ± 0.011).
These findings contribute to a better understanding of Coastal water quality
and highlight the need for periodic monitoring and management to protect
this vital ecosystem.
