Abstract

The unstable nature of grid electricity supply in many developing regions has increased the demand for reliable alternative sources of power. Solar photovoltaic (PV) energy has emerged as one of the most suitable solutions due to its availability, environmental friendliness, and low operating cost. This project presents the design, maintenance, and testing of a 3kVA solar power system intended to provide dependable electricity for residential and small office applications. The system was designed by carefully estimating the load requirement, selecting appropriate solar panels, inverter capacity, battery storage, and charge controller ratings. Component sizing was carried out to ensure energy balance between generation and consumption while maintaining system efficiency and durability. The design incorporated safety protections such as proper wiring configuration, circuit breakers, earthing, and over-charge/over-discharge control to enhance performance and lifespan. Maintenance procedures were also developed, including routine panel cleaning, battery inspection, cable connection checks, electrolyte level monitoring (for lead-acid batteries), and periodic system performance evaluation. These practices were aimed at minimizing system losses and preventing premature component failure. Testing of the constructed 3kVA solar power system was conducted to evaluate voltage stability, charging rate, inverter output waveform, load handling capacity, and backup duration. Results obtained showed that the system maintained stable output voltage within acceptable limits, efficiently powered typical household appliances, and provided reliable backup during grid outage periods. The system demonstrated high operational reliability and confirmed that proper design and maintenance significantly improve solar system performance and longevity. The study concludes that a properly sized and maintained 3kVA solar power system can serve as an effective alternative power supply, reducing dependence on conventional electricity and contributing to sustainable energy utilization.
