Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the dynamics of murder crime scenes in Akure South Local Government Area, Ondo State, with particular emphasis on the methods of investigation, the role of forensic experts, and the institutional challenges encountered during homicide investigations. The research was motivated by the rising incidence of violent crimes in urban centers of Nigeria and the need to evaluate the effectiveness of law enforcement agencies in handling murder cases. Using an investigative survey design, data were collected from police officers, forensic personnel, legal practitioners, and community members through questionnaires and interviews. The study explored the adequacy of investigative tools, the level of inter-agency collaboration, and the adherence to international best practices in crime scene management. Findings revealed significant gaps in forensic capacity, inadequate funding, poor inter-agency coordination, and limited public trust in law enforcement agencies, all of which hinder effective homicide investigation and prosecution. The study concludes that addressing these systemic challenges is critical to improving the administration of criminal justice in Akure South and Nigeria at large. It recommends increased investment in forensic technology, continuous training of investigators, community cooperation, and stronger institutional frameworks to enhance the efficiency and credibility of murder crime scene investigations. Keywords: Murder Crime Scenes, Forensic Investigation, Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, Akure South, Ondo State.
