THE INTERSECHONAUITY OF GENDER AND SEXUALITY IN TONI MORRISON'S BELOVED AND AUCE WALKER'S THE COLOR PURPLE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study explores the connection between gender and sexualiy in Alice Walker's The Colo
Purple and Toni Morison's Beloved. It examines how these identities shape the lives and
experiences of key characters.Gender is a social construct, and sexuality is a personal and
emotional identity. These clements are not separate experiences;they are closely linked forces that
influence how women and men deal with power, trauma, and identity.Characters like Celie,Shug
Avery,Sofia,Sethe,and Paul D illustrate how societal expectations,sexual violence,and
emotional repression impact personal identity and freedom. This project shows how female
charncters reclaim their power by redefining their gender roles and embracing different sexual
identities. At the same time, male characters face the harmful effects of toxic masculinity.Using
intersectional feminist theory as a basis, this work emphasizes how litcrature can give voice to
ignored experiences and challenge traditional views on gender and sexuality in African American
communities
