Abstract

This study investigates the portrayal of female sports in Complete Sports Newspaper and examines its influence on female sports development in Nigeria. Using a content analysis approach, the research analyzes articles, features, and reports published over the past five years to determine the frequency, tone, and visibility of female sports coverage. The study also explores how media representation affects public perception, participation, and support for women athletes. Findings reveal that female sports receive limited coverage, often overshadowed by male-dominated events, which impacts the growth and recognition of female athletes in Nigeria. The study concludes that media outlets play a crucial role in promoting gender equity in sports and recommends strategies to enhance the visibility and support for women’s athletics.
