OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY MANAGEMENT ON SMALL AND MEDIUM SIZED ENTERPRISES IN NIGERIA: A CASE STUDY OF IKARE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates Occupational Health and Safety Management (OHSM) practices within
Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Ibadan, Nigeria. With the increasing
significance of MSMEs in contributing to economic development, understanding their
approach to occupational health and safety is critical. The research highlights the challenges
faced by MSMEs, including resource constraints, fragmented management structures, and
inadequate training, which hinder the effective implementation of OHSM systems. Utilizing a
mixed-methods approach, this study collects data through Questionnaires from MSME owners
and employees to assess the impact of OHSM on employee well-being and organizational
performance.
Key findings reveal that effective OHSM practices lead to enhanced employee morale, reduced
workplace accidents, and improved overall productivity. Additionally, the study identifies
critical barriers to OHSM implementation, such as limited access to training and financial
resources, and emphasizes the importance of management commitment and employee
engagement in overcoming these challenges.
The research contributes to the existing literature on OHSM in Nigeria by offering practical
recommendations for MSME owners and policymakers aimed at enhancing safety practices.
The findings underscore the need for tailored OHSM strategies that consider the unique
characteristics of MSMEs, ultimately fostering a safer work environment and promoting
employee well-being. This study serves as a foundation for future research in the field,
advocating for a proactive approach to occupational health and safety in developing economies.
