SOFT DIPLOMACY AND YOUTH EMPLOYMENT IN THE CREATIVE INDUSTRY OF NIGERIA: A CASE STUDY OF NIGER STATE
Abstract
This study examines the intersection between soft diplomacy and youth employment in the creative industry of Niger State, Nigeria. Against the backdrop of high youth unemployment and the growing global significance of cultural and creative industries, the research explores how soft diplomacy contributes to the visibility, growth, and empowerment of young creatives in Niger State. The study was guided by three objectives: to analyze how soft diplomacy influences the creative industry in Niger State, to examine the role of the creative industry in creating employment opportunities for youths, and to identify the challenges limiting the use of soft diplomacy in Niger State’s creative sector. The research adopts a qualitative methodology, relying on both primary and secondary data. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with youths in various creative fields including fashion design, content creation, photography, graphic design, and writing as well as with government officials and institutional actors. Secondary data were sourced from academic literature, government policy documents, and reports from relevant organizations. Data were analyzed thematically to establish patterns and draw insights aligned with the study’s objectives. The findings reveal that soft diplomacy plays a growing role in advancing Niger State’s creative sector by providing international exposure, cultural exchange opportunities, and new markets for creative products. The creative industry itself has emerged as a vital source of employment for youths, offering income-generating opportunities in both formal and informal settings. However, persistent challenges including poor infrastructure, weak institutional support, limited funding, and low access to international platforms continue to undermine the potential of soft diplomacy in promoting youth empowerment. The study concludes that while soft diplomacy is not a standalone solution, it presents a strategic avenue for strengthening the creative industry and reducing youth unemployment in Niger State. It recommends stronger state support for cultural diplomacy initiatives, targeted investment in creative infrastructure, and the removal of systemic barriers that hinder youth participation in global creative exchanges. By addressing these challenges, Niger State can transform its creative industry into a driver of economic diversification, cultural projection, and youth empowerment.
