EFFECTS OF POULTRY EFFLUENTS ON PHYSICOCHEMICAL AND MICROBIAL ANALYSIS OF WATER
Abstract
Human activities such as animal production in many parts of the world, still impact negatively on the environmen. This study was carried out to assess the microbiological and physicochemical parameters of water samples. Water samples were collected from different points of the water at Adodo Stream, Owode Ede, Osogbo, Osun State.
The four samples collected which represents 40 m away, 20 m away, the effluent and the control were subjected to physicochemical and microbial analysis. Bacteria isolated were Escherichia coli, Bacilllus spp, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella spp, Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus mirabilis, Lactobacillus spp, Enterococcus spp and Serratia spp. Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp and Pseudomonas aeruginosa had the highest occurrence of about 43.08% respectively, while Serratia spp had the lowest occurrence of about 5.13%. Fungi isolated were Aspergillus niger, Fusarium spp, Cladosporium spp and Alternaria app. Physiochemical analysis showed that the water samples had turbidity, odour, and low dissolved oxygen compared to the control. The results obtained calls for proper discharge of poultry waste into the environment to prevent transmission of diseases by water borne pathogens.
