DEVELOPMENT OF A WEB-BASED INTERNATIONAL MOBILE EQUIPMENT IDENTITY RECORD SYSTEM
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The rise of mobile devices has led to an increase in theft. However, law enforcement agencies often do not have a centralized, real-time system for tracking and verifying device ownership using the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number. This project aims to fill that gap by creating a web-based IMEI record system to help prevent crime and improve mobile device security in Nigeria. A developmental research approach was applied, implementing a three-tier model with HTML, CSS, and PHP for the front-end and back-end, along with a MySQL database for managing data. The system design includes three user roles: public users who register devices, enforcement officers who verify and flag devices, and administrators who oversee the system. The outcome is a fully functional and secure prototype that underwent thorough testing, including unit, integration, and functional tests. These tests confirmed that all system modules work as expected, ensuring smooth data synchronization across user roles and effective control based on user access. This system makes a meaningful contribution by providing a practical, scalable, and accessible tool that allows law enforcement to quickly verify device ownership. This capability can lead to better recovery of stolen devices and help deter theft. The platform also encourages collaboration between the public and security agencies, creating a reliable framework for managing mobile assets and reducing crime.
