Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examined the impact of public enterprises on socio-economic development with particular reference to the Kano State Water Board. Public enterprises are established by the government to provide essential services, promote economic growth, and enhance the welfare of citizens. The study aimed to assess the extent to which the Kano State Water Board has contributed to employment generation, provision of potable water, revenue generation, infrastructural development, and overall improvement in the living standards of residents in Kano State. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. Both primary and secondary sources of data were utilized. Primary data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to staff of the Kano State Water Board and selected residents, while secondary data were obtained from official documents, textbooks, journals, and relevant publications. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistical tools such as frequency distribution and percentages. The findings revealed that the Kano State Water Board has played a significant role in socio-economic development through job creation, improved access to clean water, reduction in water-borne diseases, and support for commercial and industrial activities. However, the study also identified several challenges affecting its performance, including inadequate funding, poor maintenance of facilities, irregular power supply, aging infrastructure, and administrative inefficiencies. The study concluded that while the Kano State Water Board has made notable contributions to socio-economic development in Kano State, its effectiveness is constrained by structural and operational challenges. It was recommended that the government should increase funding, strengthen monitoring and accountability mechanisms, invest in modern water infrastructure, and encourage public-private partnerships to enhance service delivery and sustainability.
