EFFECT OF MOISTURE AND TEMPERATURE ON GERMINATION OF MAIZE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Study was conducted to determine the effect of moisture and temperature on germination of maize. The set apparatuses were then incubated and subjected to the following tempretures;25°C,30°C ,35°C,40°C and 45°C which served as different temperature treatment. Observations were carried out at exact period of 24hours to investigate the rate of their germination in response to three replications temperatures in both the lab and the garden germination. After that the germination percentage quantities of distilled water, 5ml, 10ml, 15ml, 20ml, and 25ml were measured with a measuring cylinder and were used to moisten the laid filter papers in the Petri dishes under replicated three times for each moisture level. The apparatuses were left to stand for 24hours to investigate the effect of this various moisture level on their germination. Germination percentage was taken according to the international standard of testing seeds (ISTS). From the results it was observed that optimum number of seed germination was observed at a temperature of 30°C with a growth percentage of 60%. The least seed germination was observed at a temperature of 25°C with a growth percentage of 10%. Also, no seed germination was observed at a temperature of 40° C and 45° C, (Table 1 & 3). is shown in (Table 2 & 4). The highest percentage germination was observed at 20ml with a percentage growth of 33.3% and the least germination was observed at 10ml and 15ml with a growth percentage of 8.3% respectively, (Table 2 & 4). In conclusion, moisture is a crucial factor in the germination of maize plants. Adequate moisture is required for water uptake, seed swelling, and initiation of metabolic processes leading to germination. The was recommended Ensuring that maize seeds receive sufficient moisture through proper irrigation practices. This includes monitoring soil moisture levels and adjusting irrigation frequency and duration accordingly. Maintaining consistent and adequate moisture in the soil promotes successful germination.
