Abstract

This study explores the role of private security companies in crime prevention within Alimosho Local Government Area, Lagos State, Nigeria. The increasing rate of criminal activities in urban areas has highlighted the need for complementary security services alongside the Nigeria Police Force. Private security organisations, through surveillance, intelligence gathering, access control, and patrol services, have become vital actors in enhancing community safety and protecting lives and property. The research adopted a descriptive survey design, and data were collected using structured questionnaires administered to residents, community leaders, and security operatives within the study area. Findings from the study reveal that private security companies contribute significantly to crime prevention by reducing burglary, theft, and other forms of criminal activity. Their presence also enhances residents’ sense of safety and fosters collaboration between communities and law enforcement agencies. However, challenges such as inadequate training, lack of modern equipment, poor coordination with the police, and threats from criminals were identified as key limitations to their effectiveness. The study concludes that while private security companies play a crucial supportive role in crime prevention, their impact can only be maximised through better regulation, enhanced collaboration with state security agencies, and community involvement. It recommends improved training standards, investment in modern security technology, proper welfare for operatives, and stronger government oversight as strategies to strengthen private security operations in Alimosho and beyond.
