Abstract

Cannabis, plant-based substances, contains various bioactive compounds, including cannabinoids, which may have therapeutic effects. Alabukun, an over the counter analgesic powder commonly used in Nigeria containing aspirin and caffeine, is often used to relieve headaches, fever, and other mild to moderate pain. Hence the study investigate the comparative effects of cannabis and alabukun on hepatotoxic biomarker in male wistar rats. Sixteen male wistar rats (150-200g) were grouped into four groups (n=4). Group 1 served as control and were given distilled water (1ml/kg bwt.), group 2 were administered cannabis extracts only (10mg/kg b.wt), group 3 were administered cannabis (10mg/kg b.wt) and alabukun (11.71mg/kg b.wt), group 4 were administered alabukun only (11.71mg/kg b.wt). The animal were administered orally using gavage. The duration of study was twenty-eight days. The experimental rats were euthanized, their liver were harvested which were used to prepare tissue homogenate. The concentration of malondialdehyde and bilirubin were determined. Cannabis, alabukun, and (cannabis+alabukun ) group causes a significant decreased in malondialdehyde concetration. Cannabis shows a slight decrease in bilirubin concentration while alabukun and cannabist alabukun group shows a significant decrease in bilirubin concentration in the liver of male wistar rats. The present study suggests that individal or combined administration of cannabis and alabukun have similar beneficial effects on hepatic bilirubin and malondialdehyde concentration.
