Abstract

The study on the semantics of cooking verbs in Yoruba sheds light on the complex interplay among language, culture and cuisine. Cooking verbs in yorùbá do more than describe culinary processes; they convey social, cultural and linguistic nuances that reflect the value and practices of yorùbá people. One of the key conclusions from the study is lexical richness. Yorùbá extensive vocabulary of cooking verbs reflect the language ability to communicate fine details about cooking procedures such as the type of food preparation and the degree of heat. We also have cultural embeddedness, Yoruba cooking verbs are culturally embedded, emphasizing the importance of food to Yoruba hospitality, social life and identity. Certain verbs are employed in certain situations that correspond to cultural customs, life feast, ceremonies and group cooking. Also there is semantic complexity where a deep cultural understanding of food preparation is indicated by the semantic distinction between similar verbs. These division are not random, rather they represent the practical expertise require for yorùbá cooking.
