ASSESSMENT OF TOXICITY FROM PLASTIC INDUSTRIAL WORKERS IN SHARADA INDUSTRIAL AREA KANO
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study assesses the level of toxicity exposure among plastic industrial workers in Sharada Industrial Area, Kano. Plastic manufacturing involves the use of various chemical substances such as additives, solvents, stabilizers, and plasticizers, which may pose serious health risks to workers through inhalation, skin contact, and prolonged exposure. The aim of this research is to evaluate the potential toxic effects associated with occupational exposure in plastic industries and to create awareness of related health hazards.
A cross-sectional study was conducted among selected workers in plastic industries within Sharada Industrial Area. Data were collected using structured questionnaires to obtain information on workers’ exposure history, safety practices, and health complaints. In addition, laboratory analysis of selected biological samples was carried out to detect possible toxic effects. The results indicated that prolonged exposure to industrial chemicals and inadequate use of personal protective equipment contributed significantly to reported health symptoms such as respiratory irritation, skin disorders, headaches, and eye irritation.
The study concludes that plastic industrial workers are at risk of toxic exposure due to unsafe working conditions and poor adherence to safety measures. It is recommended that industries enforce strict occupational safety standards, provide protective equipment, and conduct regular health monitoring to minimize health risks among workers.
