Abstract

Sickle Cell Disease is a genetic disorder that causes stiff, rod-like sickle-shaped hemoglobin in red blood cells (RBCs) and consequently poses serious health complications with dearth of treatment approaches. The study aimed at investigating the potential of methanolic leaf extract from Balanites aegyptiaca to prevent or reverse sickling of red blood cells. Leaves of Balanites aegyptiaca were evaluated for their antisickling activity in sickle cell anemia disorder. The leaves of Balanites aegyptiaca were extracted with methanol solvent using maceration method for the period of 72 hours. For the antisickling activity evaluation of the extract, SMBS (Sodium Metabisulfite) test was used, and for the membrane stability effect of the extract, osmotic fragility test was carried out to test the membrane integrity of sickled cells.
