Abstract

This project delves into a comprehensive exploration of the phonological structure of Ìjerò, a distinct dialect of the Yoruba language spoken in the town of Ìjerò, located in Èkìtì State, Nigeria. Employing the generative phonology framework, this study aims to elucidate the intricate phonological processes, rules, and patterns that govern the sound system of Ìjerò. By investigating the phonological features, syllable structure, phonotactics, and phonological alternations present in Ìjerò, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of the linguistic diversity within the Yoruba language family. The generative phonology framework provides a theoretical lens through which the phonological characteristics of Ìjerò are analyzed. This approach enables the identification of underlying phonological representations and the rule-based transformations that lead to surface- level pronunciations. The study also examines the potential interactions between the phonological components and other linguistic levels, shedding light on the intricate interplay between phonology, morphology, and syntax in shaping the overall linguistic system of Ìjerò. Through a meticulous analysis of authentic linguistic data, including wordlists, sentences, and discourse samples, this project identifies the distinctive phonemes, suprasegmental features, and phonemic inventory of Ìjerò. Additionally, the investigation uncovers the syllable structure and phonotactic constraints governing permissible sound sequences in the dialect. The project also focuses on phonological alternations, such as assimilation, vowel harmony, and consonant mutation, providing insights into how phonological rules accommodate the morphological and syntactic requirements of the language. The findings of this study contribute not only to the documentation of Ìjerò as a unique linguistic entity but also to the broader field of phonological theory. The analysis of Ìjerò phonology enriches our understanding of the Yoruba language family's phonological landscape and its dialectal variations. Furthermore, the insights garnered from this research have implications for language preservation, education, and revitalization efforts in Ìjerò and other similar linguistic contexts.
