Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the impact of high doses of Phyllanthus niruri ethanol leaf extract on the biochemical indices related to renal and liver function, as well as the lipid profile in Wistar rats. Phyllanthus niruri, a plant known for its medicinal properties, was administered to Wistar rats in high doses to evaluate potential toxicological effects and therapeutic benefits. The experimental design included a control group and treatment groups receiving varying doses of the ethanol extract. The extract was administered orally for 21 days. 30 rats were used for the study which were divided into 3 groups: Group 1 Control, Group 2 High dose I (500mg/kg b.w), Group 3 High dose II (1000mg/kg b.w). Administration of Phyllanthus niruri leaf extract at low and high doses did not result in any adverse effects on renal, liver, or lipid profile biomarkers in Wistar rats. The biochemical analyses conducted showed that the extract was well-tolerated and safe, with no significant changes observed in blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, liver enzymes, or lipid profiles. These findings suggest that Phyllanthus niruri leaf extract is safe and non-toxic at the tested doses, and may have potential therapeutic value in humans."
