THE ROLES OF SCHOOL LIBRARIES AS AN EFFECTIVE INSTRUMENT FOR ACHIEVING ACADEMIC EXCELLENT IN SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN AKOKO SOUTH WEST: A CASE STUDY OF AKUNGBA-AKOKO, ONDO STATE
Abstract
School libraries are vital in promoting literacy, independent learning, and academic achievement among students. However, in many Nigerian semi-urban communities such as Akungba, school libraries are either non-existent, poorly equipped, or underutilized. This study investigated the role of school libraries in enhancing academic excellence in selected secondary schools in Akungba, Ondo State. Specifically, it examined the availability and condition of library facilities, the extent of their use by students and teachers, their impact on academic performance, and the challenges limiting their effectiveness.
The study adopted a descriptive survey design. A total of 100 respondents comprising 70 students, 20 teachers, and 10 librarians were selected through stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, and mean scores, with a benchmark mean of 2.5 used for decision-making.
Findings revealed that most schools surveyed had functional libraries equipped with adequate textbooks and conducive reading environments. Library use was found to significantly enhance students’ examination performance, comprehension of subjects, vocabulary, and writing skills. Teachers also reported improved lesson preparation through access to library resources. However, the study identified major challenges including inadequate ICT facilities, poor funding, outdated materials, shortage of trained librarians, and limited awareness of library benefits.
The study concludes that school libraries remain indispensable to academic excellence but require urgent revitalization to meet contemporary educational needs. It recommends increased government and stakeholder funding, regular acquisition of up-to-date resources, employment of qualified librarians, and integration of ICT facilities to transform school libraries into dynamic learning hubs.
