Abstract

Nosocomial infections, also known as hospital-acquired infections, occur when patients and healthcare workers develop new infections while receiving treatment in healthcare settings like hospitals or clinics. These infections were not present when the patient was first admitted and may happen during medical procedures or through contact with healthcare workers and contaminated surfaces or equipments. This study focuses on how healthcare workers in selected primary healthcare centers in Ipu-East, Ukwa West, manage infection control. Infection control involves various practices aimed at preventing the spread of infections in healthcare settings. The research used a descriptive cross-sectional approach, involving 57 healthcare workers from seven primary healthcare centers: Obiakpu, Ezebudele, Obehie, Obibor, Umuajoha, Umuelechi, and Umuahala. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire, which included questions about infection control methods. The analysis looked at how frequently and consistently the workers followed infection control practices such as handwashing, using personal protective equipment (PPE), and cleaning the environment. The results revealed that all respondents (100%) practiced hand hygiene and regularly used PPE, although some admitted that their sterilization practices were not always consistent. While the results show a strong commitment to essential infection control measures, they also highlight the need for improvement in areas like sterilization and ensuring injection safety. Based on these findings, the study suggests improving training for healthcare workers, ensuring a steady supply of PPE, implementing strict cleaning procedures, and raising community awareness about infection prevention. The research provides important insights into the current infection control practices and the challenges faced by healthcare workers, stressing the need for continuous education and adequate resources to improve health outcomes in the community. These findings aim to guide policymakers and healthcare leaders in developing strategies to enhance infection control in the area.
