INVESTIGATION ON PHYTOCHEMICALS COMPOSITION AND GC-MS PROFILLING ON RAVOULFIA ROOT EXTRACT AND ITS ANALGESIC EFFECT ON WISTER RAT
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Phytochemical analysis is an essential tool in the study of natural products for their potential health benefits. Salicia nitida, a plant native to Africa, has been traditionally used for its medicinal properties. This study is aimed at Investigating the phytochemical and GC-MS profiling of Salicia nitida root extracts and its effects on histopathological parameters in CCL4 induced hepatotoxic albino rats. The results of the phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of various secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, saponins, and tannins in the roots extracts of Salicia nitida. The GC-MS profiling further identified specific compounds with potential therapeutic effects. The rats were randomly divided into 4 groups and administered extracts orally using the oral galvage. Group I served as the normal control, Group 2 was administered with CCL4, Group 3 was treated with Vitamin E while Group 4 was treated with 500mg/kg of salicia nitida extract for 7 days. The administration of the extract and Vitamin E led to a positive impact on the body weight when compared to the control group and the group induced with CCL4. Furthermore, histopathological examination of liver tissues from rats treated with Salicia nitida root extracts and Vitamin E showed significant improvements in liver architecture compared to rats treated with CC14 alone. This indicates that the root extracts may have a protective effect against liver damage induced by toxic substances.
