EFFECT OF CRASSOCEPHALUM CREPIDIOIDES LEAF MEAL ON SERUM ANTIOXIDANT ENZYMES AND IMMUNE RESPONSE OF BROILER CHICKEN
Abstract
The study investigated the effect of Crassocephalum crepidiodes leaf meal on serum antioxidant enzymes and the immune response of broiler chicken. A total of sixty four 1-day-old Cobb 500 broiler chicks were randomly distributed to three dietary treatments and twenty one birds were assigned to each treatment (7 birds/replicate) in a completely randomized design (CRD) for six weeks. The experimental diets were divided into three treatments and designated as Diet 1 (basal/control diet), Diet 2 (basal + 0.20% Vitamin C) and Diet 3 (basal +. 0.25% crasssocephalum crepidioides leaf meal, CCLM). The result revealed a significant (p0.5) difference in Immunoglobulin E, Immunoglobulin G and Immunoglobulin M across all treatment. However, an increase was observed in IgG and IgM level of broiler chicken fed diet containing CCLM (Diet 3) while a decrease was observed in IgE of broiler chicken fed diet containing CCLM. Thus, it was concluded that inclusion of 0.25% of CCLM leaf meal in broiler chickens’ diet stimulate the immune system and positively support serum antioxidant enzymes of broiler chicken.
