THE IMPACT OF NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATION (IFAD-CBARDP) ON RURAL DEVELOPMENT IN JAKUSKO LOCAL GOVERNMENT, YOBE STATE
Abstract
Abstract
The IFAD – Community Based for Agriculture and Rural Development (CBARDP) is an integrated agriculture and rural development program aimed at improving the livelihood and condition of rural poor with emphasis on women and other vulnerable groups. The objective of the research work were to assessed the successes of the non-governmental organization (IFAD-CBARDP) on the provision of food security in Jakusko L.G of Yobe state, examine the challenges that impede the success of the program in ensuring food security in Jakusko and to identify solutions for the effective performance of IFAD-CBARDP towards rural development in Yobe state. The data was generated from two major sources; primary and secondary data. The study adopt simple random sampling and used stratified sampling technique to select the respondents. The study is a survey research hence descriptive statistics was utilized to analyze the data. The research work concluded that although the rural empowerment acceleration program initiated by Non-Governmental Organization in Yobe state, originally came to the aid of the citizenry as a result of the failure of the government to deliver and respond to the development felt-needs of the populace, most especially the vulnerable groups like women, children, aged persons, handicapped, blind and deaf people in Yobe state, by adopting proper strategy that will harness the potentials and make the vulnerable group equal stakeholders in development to improve the quality of life of the entire society and particularly the vulnerable groups who are disadvantaged. To this extent, it is a welcomed development. The recipient communities should be made fully involved. Men (vulnerable groups) are the focus, as such they should be participating actively in the conception, planning implementation and evaluation of the rural empowerment acceleration program. Again, total commitment from the government is recommended as well. Unless the government is ready to act as a catalyst for rural development, there will be little or no impetus from the rural communities. This means, the government should assist the Non-Governmental Organizations financially, materially and legal backing in accelerating rural development in Yobe state and Nigeria at large.
