ANALYSIS ON DEATH CAUSE BY DIABETES IN KANO METROPOLY (FROM 2011 TO 2020) CASE STUDY OF MURTALA MUHAMMAD SPECIALIST HOSPITAL, KANO
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major non-communicable disease contributing significantly to morbidity and mortality worldwide. In Nigeria, the burden of diabetes-related deaths has increased alongside rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases, yet detailed analyses of diabetes mortality patterns at tertiary hospitals in Kano are limited. This study aimed to analyze the causes and trends of death among diabetic patients admitted to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital (MMSH), Kano, from 2011 to 2020.
Methods: A retrospective review was conducted using hospital admission and mortality records of patients diagnosed with diabetes mellitus over a 10-year period (January 2011 to December 2020). Data extracted included age, sex, date of admission, date of death, and primary cause of death. Causes of death were classified according to standard clinical categories (e.g., cardiovascular, infectious, acute diabetic emergencies, renal complications). Descriptive statistics and trend analyses were performed to identify patterns over time.
Conclusions: Diabetes mellitus contributed substantially to in-hospital mortality at MMSH over the decade studied, with infections and cardiovascular complications as leading causes of death. These findings highlight the need for strengthened preventive care, improved glycemic control, early detection of complications, and targeted public health strategies to reduce diabetes-related mortality in Kano Metropolitan.
