Abstract

High demanding nature of nurses’ job in Nigeria make them more vulnerable to a variety of physical and psychological stressors which can lead to the development of psychological distress. Despite several attempt have been made to uncover some of the possible stressors behind psychological distress nurses, there still little empirical knowledge on the extent at which work-family conflict and sleep quality contribute to distress among population of Nigeria nurses. Hence, this study examined possible predictions of work-family conflict and sleep quality on psychological distress among female nurses in some selected hospitals in Akoko, Ondo State. The study adopted cross sectional survey method. Using purposive and accidental sampling techniques, 155 nurses were sampled from seven hospitals in Akoko, Ondo State. The participants’ age ranged between 19 to 65 years (Mean =36.43 SD=12.60). Data on work-family conflict, sleep quality and psychological distress were collected through structured questionnaire. Three hypotheses were formulated and tested with Regression Analysis. The findings showed that work-family conflict significantly predicted psychological distress (β= -.27, t= 2.93, p< .01). However, sleep quality had no significant prediction on psychological distress (β= -.08, t= -.83, p> .01). The joint prediction of work-family conflict and sleep quality was significant [F (2,152) = 4.66, p< .05]. The study therefore recommends that healthcare management should implement family-friendly employment policies aimed to balance the demands between job and employee’s (nurses) family. Key words: Work-family conflict, sleep quality, and psychological distress. Word Counts: 239
