INVESTIGATING THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE OF AFFORESTATION IN SABUWA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA
Abstract
This study investigate the socio-economic importance of afforestation in
Sabuwa Local Government Area through the utilization of questionnaires,
interviews, and local government offices as sources of data. Afforestation plays
a crucial role in addressing deforestation and environmental degradation while
promoting sustainable development. The research questions focused on the
current state of afforestation, its socio-economic benefits, challenges and
opportunities, and policy options for promoting afforestation. The methodology
involved field surveys, interviews, and data from local government records and
environmental agencies. The findings revealed that 81% of the respondents
were aware of afforestation programs, and 85% believed the state of
afforestation was above 50%. The major benefits of afforestation were income
generation and environmental conservation. The challenges included climate
change, land availability, funding, and community participation. The study
recommended policy strengthening, awareness campaigns, community
involvement, financial incentives, and collaboration with stakeholders as
strategies for promoting afforestation. Future studies should explore the specific
socio-economic benefits of afforestation and how they can be maximized in
other local governments.
