BIOCLIMATIC DESIGN STRATEGIES FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS. SOUTHEAST PERSPECTIVE.
Abstract
Bioclimatic design strategies are among the most promising sustainable
approaches for improving energy efficiency of buildings. However, their
contributions to reducing the energy consumption and carbon footprint of
buildingsarelargelydependentonthealignmentofbuildingdesignwithclimatic
conditions. Bioclimatic designed building responds to the climatic conditions
withinits environmentas theyare modified withappropriate designstrategiesto
createaconduciveenvironmentthatprovides thermal and visual comforts to its
users at thelowest energy consumption. The study iscarried out to conceptually
review bioclimatic design strategies for sustainable development of residential
buildings- southeast perspective using the descriptive analysis to analyze the
climateofthestudyareaandidentifythebioclimaticdesignstrategythatwillaid energy
efficiency. The research methodology adopted is a review of existing literature
for warm humid climate. And finally, a proposal thatcan beapplied to residential
building design in southeast states as such; Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and
Imo was developed. This study helps us conclude that some bioclimatic design
strategies can be used in countries with similar climates and therefore, advocates
for more incorporation of bioclimatic design strategies for energy-efficient
buildings. Moreover, blinds and tree shading strategies are too recommended for
arid and temperate climates, while natural ventilation is advisable only for the
last one. Additionally, significant energy saving could be achieved by
optimizing the building orientation.
