Abstract

This study investigates the impact of receiving and storage procedures of the overall performance of Popcola Nigeria Limited, a Nigerian beverage manufacturing company based in Kano State. The research addresses key challenges in warehouse management within Nigerian manufacturing firms, such as inefficient handling, delays, and infrastructural limitations. Guided by four specific objectives—to assess the impact of receiving and storage on finished goods, evaluate the effectiveness of adopted management approaches, examine staff involvement in warehouse activities, and identify militating problems—the study employed a descriptive survey design. Data were collected from 66 purposively selected staff members in warehousing, logistics, and inventory control using structured questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and personal observations. Secondary data from company records and literature supplemented the primary sources. Analysis utilized descriptive statistics (frequencies, percentages) via SPSS software. Findings reveal that efficient receiving and storage significantly enhance product quality, reduce damage, and support production flow, with 83.3% of respondents acknowledging delays' negative effects and 88% endorsing proper handling's benefits. While 72.7% rated the organization's systems as effective, gaps persist in training (74.3% positive but 25.8% concerned), technology adoption (39.39% manual systems), and infrastructure. Staff involvement spans skilled roles across levels, but challenges like inadequate space (75.7%), poor handling (83.3%), and supplier delays (80.3%) hinder operations. The study concludes that robust receiving and storage procedures are strategic for operational efficiency and competitiveness in Nigerian manufacturing. Recommendations include investing in Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), expanding facilities, enhancing staff training, and improving supplier communication to mitigate identified issues and foster sustainable growth.
